Today there are many resolve about feminism which is gross misconceptions and misunderstandings of womanhood. Over the years, the female gender has been relegated
and made to believe that she can’t make any difference especially in leadership. While the woman argues that she has not been given the opportunity she merits in the front role, the man believes the woman is simply laid back. It is just a case of women, having been restricted to a small spot for along time, have accepted that condition to be who they are.
Redefining Feminism
The truth is, the scripture which is our standard does not in anywhere state that women are lesser human beings. First Peter 3:7 records “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel where Apostle Paul compared women to a weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. He didn’t say they are. It’s even dangerous to treat them as if they are because that would mean dishonoring them and the consequence is unanswered prayers. The misinterpretation of this passage has made many see the woman as redundant in almost every way.
Feminism is basically the movement for the political, social, and educational equality of women with men, and has occurred mainly in Europe and the United States. It has its roots in the humanism of the 18th century and in the Industrial Revolution. In Nigeria and most other African countries, feminism that needs a redress and a proof that women can take the lead.
Until very recently in Nigeria it was almost a taboo for women to take certain offices particularly in politics and corporate organizations. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf broke that unseemingly impossible path for women when she became Africa’s first female president.
Feminist issues range from access to employment (certain jobs and offices believed that only a men could do or hold), education (many still believe that a woman should not have more education than her husband, invariably should not earn more than her husband, hence she may become a threat to his position in the home as the head), child care (many women are still reduced to being the “kitchen person” as such many think she may never do anything better outside the kitchen or dotting after the children) contraception and abortion, to equality in the workplace (if she should be paid as much as her male colleague in spite of her contribution to the welfare of the organization.), changing family roles, redress for sexual harassment in the workplace, and the need for equal political representation. Politically the situation is even worse as she is seen as “feeble” to take up political positions.
Conventionally, women had been regarded as inferior to men physically, psychologically and intellectually. Both law and theology (not God) had ordered their subjection. Women became incapacitated; they could not possess property in their own names (even when they do have property it has to be made believed that her husband own it) engage in business (for fear that they would become richer or more famous than their spouse), or control the disposal of their children or even of their own persons.(her suggestions to which school the children would attend or who should visit the family during holiday didn’t count) .
All over the world, women are still fighting for a position they think they have been denied. The truth is that liberation of women has since occurred but women are yet to recognize that. The good news is that little by little, women are now demanding for higher education, entrance into trades and professions, rights to property, and the right to be voted for which are also conceded by the men; the fact that the woman can do as much as the man and in some cases better.
So what’s the idea of TWL
Here TWL we are not promoting women to become domineering and bossy but to correct a few misconceptions and misunderstanding about womanhood rights which need airing.
There is no where in the scripture where women were instructed not to take the lead. There is infact an example, Deborah who led a nation, Israel to victory. (Judges 4) This is still very possible, there are more women who can lead nations to victory or even do more.
Scripture does not forbid the education of women. In most instances the Bible even uses “he” to refer to both sexes. Although the Bible didn’t state one should be educated or to what extent but TWL believe that God is not against, excellent, well-rounded education for all women. We believe that God commands all Christians to love Him with their minds as well as with their hearts and souls. In some part of the world there is still the argument of whether the man should be educated, isn’t this an argument for ignorance! Research shows that many women have done brilliant well in various fields’ men where men were seen as boss. TWL believes that such education is available to every woman who has a desire to learn, a love of reading, and a willingness to study, think and change their world.
Being a godly wife has nothing to do with being a weakling. You are a leader in your home because the proof that you can leaders is reflected on how you have managed your leadership skills with your husband and children. It will only take God for you to be TWL being a wife alone in leadership position that if you do not succeed in there is nom guarantee that you would succeed in other leadership positions. The godly wife is called to be a visionary steward; a thinker; a do-er of difficult things; a lover of excellence; a light to her children; and a shoulder-to-shoulder partner with her husband, walking the same path with zest and commitment. Gifts will vary, but a husband who values his wife will always see the incredible benefit of having a comrade-in-arms as his closest companion through life. With their complementary roles, the visionary husband and wife don't walk in opposite directions with differing agendas, so in spite of her leadership responsibilities she is still his “helpmeet” They unite their hearts and minds and work toward the same goals, each in their own God-ordained sphere. A wife's submission has nothing to do with being inferior or unintelligent. Every person on earth has to submit to someone or some thing.
Women leaders are not good home maker. Never believe the lie of the devil. You aren't less of a homemaker, grow your own vegetables, sew all of your family's clothes, teach your children five foreign languages, do all the house chores, help the children with their homework, plan cook for the family and do the dishes, organize your child’s birthday party birthday party. The woman is much more than this. God definitely had more in stock for her before she was created. There are many women who perform the roles of the home maker and being a leader excellently without a nurse.
There is no uniform for women in Scripture, and there is a lot of room for creativity and freedom within the commands to be modest, pure, and feminine. We cannot hold others to a man-made standard of dress. If we have personal convictions about clothing, they must be grounded in God's Word, and we must treat others with charity and grace. Not everyone has reached the same conclusions that we have, and we don't shun women based upon outward appearances. Jesus dined with prostitutes, calling them to holiness, so we can surely reach out to our neighbors with charity, even if we disagree with their standard of dress! There's no such thing as a "Christian Taliban" when it comes to modest dress. (If you want to study this topic from Scripture, start with the following verses: Deut. 22:5, I Tim. 2:9, I Pet. 3:3-4, Proverbs 31:21-22, Gen. 24:22, and Isaiah 61:10.) Wearing dresses and being feminine cannot cover a haughty spirit and a holier-than-thou attitude.
Godly husbands do not treat their wives like children, browbeat them, or abuse them in any way. We've heard about websites whose authors claim it is a good thing to keep women in line by treating them as lesser beings. Scripture is clear: as you do to others, you are asking it to be done to you. Real men treat women like queens and co-heirs--not as chattel or children.
You are not a better Christian if you have a dozen children. Children are a blessing and a heritage from God. We love them. We thank God for each one. But we don't use them as rungs of a ladder to stand over the heads of our fellow believers. God is in control, and He may choose to withhold the gift of children from the godliest people we know. Conversely, He may give many children to parents who squander their heritage and reap the whirlwind. None of us has an eye into the mind of the Almighty, and anyone who thinks he stands should take care, lest he fall (I Cor. 10:12).
Biblical womanhood is not a "white thing." When we get letters that claim this, we can only shake our heads. Scripture clearly teaches we are all of "one blood"--the only race is the human race (Acts 17:26). To say emulating the godly standards of Scripture is "white" is insulting to people of all colors. You are not a better Christian if you are white. To believe so is to deny our common heritage in Eden. All women sisters.
Women in the work force are not the objects of our debate on this site. We are not judges over individual circumstances. All women are welcome here to reach out to others. Our desire is to share the truth about the roots and causes of feminism and the effects it has had on society, culture and development in general. Some of us writing for TWL were once feminists ourselves, who didn’t believe that women can make better leaders, today that is in the past.
Woman, you too can take the lead!

No one could have imagined that 31 years after her torture at the hands of the Chilean military, Michelle Bachelet would be inaugurated as Chile's first female president. The road from Villa Grimaldi to La Moneda, the presidential palace in the Chilean capital of Santiago, was a long and winding one, taking Bachelet through Australia, East Germany, and finally back to Chile. |
